Full hand

5, folks. He turned 5, a full hand of fingers, on Friday.

See the badge? (My version of a Waldorf felt birthday crown.) They always feature a place special to Calder. Last year's badge was made using a piece of the Dakota's map where Calder plans to visit to see Sue's stomping grounds. This year's badge features his beloved San Francisco to which he hopes to return sometime this year.

We had an awesome day that started out at our favorite breakfast spot in town. Calder, of course, chose the waffle, and since he's now 5 he ate the whole thing with a fork. Did you know that once you turn 5 you don't use your fingers to eat your food? True.

In the afternoon all the grandparents and his great grandparent, Gramma Ginny, joined us for hot dogs, summer's finest corn on the cob, homemade baked beans, and of course, the cake.

I had also made up these ready-to-paint watercolor cards (first seen here) that everyone - including Lake - painted and gave to Calder. These were a hit! It was so out of the norm for some of the folks to be painting with watercolors and brushes. I think everyone really enjoyed it, and I'm so happy Calder will forever have these special paintings and memories of his family with him on his fifth birthday.

Calder, you continue to blow my mind. You've got an incredible spirit, and I can't wait to see the many ways you will change and grow this coming year. Knowing you, it's sure to be great!
